When the viewers see Ann Dowd’s Aunt Lydia for the first time in season 6, she is venturing toward Jezebel’s, hoping to find Janine. As a devoted audience member of the show would remember, Jezebel’s is the name brothels often had under the Republic of Gilead. These are the places where rebellious women are generally sent as punishment.

Their other option is the penal colonies, contaminated by pollution and radioactive waste.Lydia does find Janine there. Moreover, she discovers that the other woman has been sent to the Jezebel’s to work for the totalitarian patriarchal theocracy that rules over the territories that once used to be the continental United States.

Lydia tries to assure Janine by saying, “I will get you out of this terrible place.” However, the latter bitterly observes, “Every time you try to help me, you only end up making things worse.”Janine discloses that she has been forced to work as a sex worker at the establishment.

A troubled Lydia responds, “I was told you’d be rewarded for your service.” This prompts Janine to sardonically remark, “Yeah, well, surprise! They lied to you.”Toward the end of the scene, one of the patrons asks for Janine by her name, Kitty, and she has to leave.
