It’s not just about putting students in groups; it’s about truly empowering them to take ownership of their learning. This cognitive shift hasn’t been easy, but we’ve been at it now for almost four years.
We laid a foundation through our collaboration with Throughline Learning working with the learning pit from James Nottingham, helping teachers embrace productive struggle as a critical part of the learning process for students. Now we are working with the team at Instructional Empowerment to change the way we approach teaching and learning. Much of our progress has come from focusing on and returning to 3 key questions:Can our students articulate why they’re doing what they’re doing in every lesson, every day?Are we truly standards-driven, not textbook-driven?How are we connecting learning to our competencies for success, which we’ve brought all the way down to kindergarten? Even our youngest learners are saying, ‘Today I was a reflective thinker because I did.
..’ “More from AngieJulie Moore, Assistant Superintendent of Innovation and Learning, Liberty Public Schools, MO“Our approach to innovation and learning is deeply rooted in collaboration – both within our district and through strategic external partnerships.
Our internal capacity was showcased beautifully on Valentine’s Day when we hosted a district-wide professional learning (PL) event centered around 5 hubs: AI, SEL, Real-World Learning, MTSS, and our Graduate Profile. Each hub featured a community keynote speaker and sessions led by our teachers. We had an impressive 79 presentations, making sure to include our paraprofessionals by soliciting their learning interests.
The planning for this large-scale PL day is a collaborative effort starting in August. I typically set the vision for the day and our talented innovation and learning coaches bring it to life, shaping the program for each hub and identifying rockstar teachers to lead the workshops.”More from Julie Share Tweet Share Forward Throughline Learninghttps://throughlinelearning.
