The first IP69-rated smartphones are about to hit the market. This rating guarantees unprecedented protection, with a virtually waterproof smartphone capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions. IP stands for International Protection Marking or Ingress Protection.
The first number indicates the level of protection against solid particles, such as sand or dust. The maximum protection is 6, and this is the level adopted by the majority of models on the market today. Where differences come into play is with the second number, which refers to the level of water-resistance.
Here, the maximum is 9, and so far no smartphone has been able to boast such a rating. That's why, for the time being, IP68 is the best available on the market. However, the end of this year could see the first IP69-certified smartphones arrive at retail.
These are Android-based phones from Chinese brands, specifically the Realme GT 7 Pro and the OnePlus 13. This level of certification guarantees resistance to water, even when immersed for long periods, as well as protection against high-pressure water jets. This means that IP69-certified smartphones could withstand the worst weather conditions.
The main advantage of this standard is that it offers maximum protection, making it ideal for anyone working in harsh environments or engaged in extreme outdoor activities. On paper, at least, it also guarantees a device that should last longer than the competition. However, the reality is that few people will actually be confronted with situations requiring such a high level of protection.
