ST. LOUIS – Western Michigan hockey knocked off Boston U to win the national championship on Saturday night. Two days after taking down Denver in double overtime to win their first-ever Frozen Four game, the Broncos took down another college hockey behemoth to cap off a magical season with a national title.
Wyatt Schingoethe got the scoring started just minutes into the game, and after Boston tied it, Cole Crusberg-Roseen scored to give the Broncos a lead heading into the first intermission. Ty Henricks briefly gave Western Michigan a 3-1 lead in the second, but Boston responded minutes later to pull back within a goal. The third period was the biggest 20 minutes in program history.
Both teams went back and forth for the first seven minutes before Owen Michaels cashed in to put the Broncos on the brink of victory, 4-2. Hakkarainen and Michaels scored their second goals in the final minutes to seal he game. The Broncos finished the season with a 34-7-1 record.
