West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee (ANI file photo) NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit Sandeshkhali on Monday, marking her first trip to the region since the massive and violent protests, erupted over allegations of sexual harassment against local TMC leaders. The visit focused on government welfare programs, comes as a step toward reconciliation and rebuilding trust in the community. West Bengal CM confirmed the visit at the state secretariat, saying, “I will visit Sandeshkhali on December 30 to attend a public distribution programme.
People had asked me before the elections whether I would visit Sandeshkhali or not. I had told them that I would be going later.” Several women from Sandeshkhali, who had been vocal during the protests, expressed their anticipation and hope for an opportunity to meet the chief minister.
For many, the visit signifies a moment of closure and a step forward. Seema Das, a resident of Sarberia-Agarhati, shared her thoughts with TOI, saying, “Now there is peace in Sandeshkhali. We are happy that they (prime accused Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates) went to jail.
We requested Didi to come earlier, but we are glad she is visiting now.” Champa Sardar, a resident of Sardarpara, said: "We protested to reclaim our land. Now that we have it back, we feel secure.
We look forward to discussing our issues and expectations with the chief minister." Rina Patra from Trimohini added: "The people we protested against are in jail, and we are now at peace. Didi's visit makes us happy, and we hope she will listen to us.
" The public distribution program, scheduled for 1 PM on Monday, will focus on implementing state-run welfare schemes like ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ and 'Banglar Bari.' According to Banerjee, around 20,000 residents will benefit from these initiatives. The chief minister added that she plans to hand over certificates of various schemes to around 100 individuals during the event.
Sandeshkhali had been a flashpoint of unrest earlier this year due to alleged atrocities by TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides, leading to widespread protests. With the main accused now in jail, the region has experienced a return to peace. As preparations for the visit continue, security and administrative arrangements are in full swing to ensure a smooth and successful event.
