The Founder of Women’s Elite Sports Empowerment Initiative(WESIE), Funke Adeniji,said the initiative would revolusionise Women’s basketball in Nigeria. Adeniji called on Nigerians to support the initiative aimed at motivating and empowering elite female athletes in the country. Adeniji made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.
She also called on Nigerians to encourage more female youth to get involve in sporting activities. According to her, sports development was crucial for girls’ physical and mental well-being, self-confidence and career opportunities. “ I’m passionate about empowering young Nigerian females through sports.
I urge Nigerians to encourage more girls to participate in sporting activities. “ By investing in female sports development, Nigeria can produce world-class athletes, inspire future generations, and contribute to social and economic growth,” she said. She said that the ongoing tournament aims to inspire more young females to engage in basketball.
“ To achieve this goal, WESIE has launched a league featuring 15 teams now vying for top honours at the ongoing competition. “ The League is poised to revolutionise women’s basketball in Nigeria, bridging the gap between local talents and international standards. “ We hope to inspire interest and create opportunities and pathways for local players and sports personnel to excel in and through sports,” she said.
The game have been ongoing since Nov. 1, across the six geopolitical zones and will run for the next six weeks . NAN reports that the participating team includes Life League basketball club of Lagos ,Victoria Queens basketball club of Lagos, OBA basketball of Abeokuta, Divine Speed Basketball club of Warri and Impressions Basketball Academy of Asaba READ ALSO: Paris 2024: FIBA names D’Tigress’ Rena Wakama Best Women’s Basketball Coach Others are Hoop Dreams basketball club of Ibadan ,Books and Balls basketball club of Osogbo,Hope Academy basketball of Akure and Dream Chasers basketball club of Adamawa.
Also participating are Coal City Baskeball club of Enugu, Suns Sparks Basketball club of Jos, Village Buzzers basketball club of Abuja ,Titans Academy basketball of Abuja, AGF Basketball of Kaduna and Spartans Basketball of Taraba..
