Bedwas RFC has suspended Martyn Evans after WalesOnline reported on his crimes against women

A rugby club has suspended a player after we exposed his "appalling" record of crimes against women. Last weekend WalesOnline reported on how Bedwas RFC reserve wing Martyn Evans' abusive behaviour left his latest victim on the brink of taking her own life. Natalie, who asked us not to use her surname, told how the 36-year-old from Caerphilly county controlled, threatened, and abused her for years.

After she left him he bombarded her with vile messages – including "I'm gonna ruin your life" and "Now you got no-one since [your aunt] has died haha" – and was eventually sentenced to a community order for breaching a non-molestation order. His record also includes crimes against three other women – one for assault by beating, the other two for criminal damage – and other convictions . Evans has recently been part of Bedwas rugby club's Barbarians squad.

When we first contacted the club about his previous convictions and Natalie's account of their relationship a spokesman said the club "believe this dispute to be between the two parties" and had no comment to make. But following publication of our piece the club – which is a feeder team for Newport's professional side the Dragons – posted on its website: "Bedwas RFC has seen the recent press coverage concerning a member of its Bedwas Barbarians 2nd XV member Martyn Evans. The club’s management have been appalled to learn of the full facts of Mr Evans’ conduct and his convictions.

"The club has taken the action of suspending Mr Evans from both the Barbarians squad and the club premises. This case will be dealt with in line with the club’s disciplinary procedure. The club does not routinely vet/DBS-check players unless they have wider coaching/off-field duties around the club.

This is in line with the Welsh Rugby Union’s safeguarding policy, to which the club adheres to in the running all of its rugby activity. "The club has been in contact with the Welsh Rugby Union regarding this case and they have advised the club that the union’s safeguarding department are fully aware of the situation. The club, along with all member clubs of the Welsh Rugby Union, stands opposed to misogyny and violence against women and this behaviour will not be tolerated at the club.

" Natalie spoke out about the relationship not only to raise awareness of domestic abuse but also because she believes there were times when the criminal justice system failed her. You can read the full story on her experiences here . If you or someone you know is affected by domestic abuse visit the Live Fear Free website or call the helpline on 0808 80 10 800.

Natalie also recommended Stand Up to Domestic Abuse which she said had been a "massive support". And the Samaritans can be contacted for free around the clock 365 days a year on 116 123..
