A new brewery is opening on James Island this week. The large facility, from the operators of two well-known West Ashley taprooms, joins Fam’s Brewing Co., the only brewery on James Island.

Charles Towne Fermentory , revered for thoughtfully crafted beers like the Sungazer IPA, has added a third Charleston location just off Folly Road near Bohemian Bull. It opens at noon Sept. 21.

The brewery’s expansion comes as others have closed.

Brewlab, Tradesman Brewing Co . and Fatty’s Beer Works all shuttered peninsula taprooms this year. Charles Towne Fermentory co-owner Adam Goodwin said their decision to open on James Island came out of a need for more production space.

With the lease at the Avondale location set to expire soon, the new outpost also provides Charles Towne Fermentory stability for the future, Goodwin said. He also recognizes the opportunity this largely untapped market presents. I’m excited to be more involved over here in James Island,” Goodwin said. Patrons can expect more than a dozen taps, televisions, video games and a small outdoor area at the 1750 Signal Point Rd., space, which can hold 175 guests.

Nonalcoholic options, plus cider and wine, join the beer offerings, and rotating food trucks will set up on-site to serve food. Goodwin said he’s looking forward to using the space to craft more experimental brews. He's also considering expanding distribution.

As the business grows, their focus remains on the quality of the beer and the community they support, he said. “That hasn’t changed since day one,” Goodwin said. For more information, follow Charles Towne Fermentory on Instagram @ctfjamesisland.
