Brent Litchard was the hero for Shreveport on Friday and Lucas Deeb the man on Saturday as the Mudbugs collected a pair of crucial victories (2-1 and 3-2) as the 2024-25 regular season draws to a close. For the past few weeks, Mudbugs head coach Jason Campbell has talked about the desire to have a chance to secure a bye during the final regular-season series.

“Here we are,” Campbell said Saturday night. Shreveport has climbed within two points of second-place Corpus Christi in the race for the final first-round bye in the North American Hockey League’s South Division. Appropriately, those two teams will close the season with matchups on Friday and Saturday night at The George.

The Mudbugs need two victories against the IceRays or a regulation win and an overtime/loss to secure the No. 2 seed and avoid a best-of-3 play-in playoff series against Colorado or Odessa. “I like that we have that opportunity,” Campbell said, “but I’m sure Corpus Christi is happy with that chance, too.

” Shreveport amassed a mind-boggling 100 shots on goal – and allowed just 42 -- in two games against last-place Oklahoma. “We did enough both nights to win,” Campbell said. “We possessed the puck fairly well and out-chanced them, but that’s why you play the game.

You have to fight tooth and nail to get every opportunity.” “We need to work on finishing a bit more.” Note: The Mudbugs honored Shreveport's high school hockey teams during intermissions on Saturday.
