
HOUSTON — The Greater Houston area could see high rainfall totals by Friday night. The rain could start for parts of our region on Thursday night and increase through Friday night. Data shows some heavy rain in spots Friday.
Street and highway flooding were the main concerns. The timeline will be revised as Friday approaches, but it's looking to be a rainy day. Thursday evening - 30% rain chances for the Houston area.
A low front brings rain to Central and South Texas. Thursday is the home opener for the Houston Astros. Friday - Rain chances increase to 80% for the entire area.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms will move in before sunrise on Friday and increase in coverage through the day. If rain trains, or redevelops over the same area for an extended period of time, street and stream flooding will become a concern. Thankfully, the area has seen very little rain in the last few weeks.
As a result, the probability of bayou flooding remains very low, albeit not zero. Low lying roadways and areas that are typically susceptible to flooding in heavy rain events will be the most vulnerable, leading to issues for commuters. Rain totals on average will range from 2 to 6 inches, with some spots seeing locally higher numbers, especially in the most persistent downpours.
Generally speaking, it looks like the higher rain totals will favor spots south of I-10, but any shift in the forecast to the north could result in higher impacts for the Houston metro. Friday is the watch party for the Houston Cougars. By Friday night, areas like El Campo and Bay City could see over 6 inches of rain.
