
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A developing system over the western Untied States is forecast to produce multiple rounds of severe weather across the nation, including in the Southeast this weekend. Strong and severe storms are expected in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry throughout Sunday.
What We're TrackingThis system is expected to become stronger and more organized over the next day or so as it moves from the Rocky Mountains eastward to the Great Plains. Severe storms, tornadoes and flooding rain is forecast to impact the mid-section of the Country on Friday. The primary severe risk area stretches for Iowa to northern Mississippi.
While this system slowly moves eastward into Saturday, conditions at the surface will remain very unstable over the southeast U.S. More severe weather is forecast on Saturday with the primary risk area developing again over Mississippi and into Alabama and potions of western Georgia.
A tornado outbreak is possible with ample wind shear and deep moisture flowing northward form the Gulf. Remain Weather Aware if you have any travel plans to our west on Saturday.Weather Aware Sunday - Local ImpactsThe severe weather risk will continue to move eastward with this system.
Strong and severe storms are expected in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry late Sunday morning and are expected to continue into the early evening. While the overall risk will be lower than for locations to our west, this system has potential to be impactful locally. Our primary concern with severe storms on Sunday will be damaging wind gusts over 50 mph.
Even without severe storms, Sunday is forecast to be a breezy and gusty day as the associated cold front sweeps through the region. There is the possibility that as this system moves though our area that there will be a risk for some isolated tornadoes. This will be due to ample instability and a decent amount of wind shear - a change in wind direction with height.
The more wind shear, the more likely it is for thunderstorms to rotate and produce tornadoes. Right now, we are working on fine-tuning the forecast details including the timing for storms and will have a better picture of the threats and timing over the next day or so. The general window we are looking at for severe storms on Sunday will be between 10 a.
m. through 8 p.m.
How To PrepareSince we are now heading into springtime – when severe thunderstorms become more likely – it is a good idea to think about what you would to in the even that a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning is issued for your area. Have a plan to get indoors and to the lowest level of a sturdy structure away from windows and doors.You also need a reliable way to receive critical weather alerts.
