A group of aggrieved youths in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have boldly declared their dissatisfaction with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vowing not to vote for what they termed as “lies and unfulfilled promises” in the upcoming general elections. The protest took place during a political rally organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where the youths made their voices heard through placards, chants, and emotional speeches.
According to eyewitness reports, the rally, which was meant to bolster support for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential ambitions, quickly turned tense as dozens of youths gathered to express their frustrations over the state of the economy, rising unemployment, and what they perceive as failed promises from the ruling government. The demonstrators accused the Vice President and the NPP of neglecting the plight of the average Ghanaian, especially the youth, who are battling joblessness and economic hardship.
“We were full of hope when Dr. Bawumia promised us economic transformation and digitization. Years later, our situation has worsened.
Prices are high, jobs are scarce, and we feel deceived,” said Kwabena Asare, one of the protest leaders. “This time, we will not vote for lies. We need real change.
” Many of the protesters pointed to what they called inconsistencies between the government’s campaign promises and their actual performance in office. They claimed that the Vice President’s economic policies had failed to alleviate poverty and had instead deepened the financial struggles of ordinary citizens. The Ashanti Region, traditionally a stronghold of the NPP, appears to be experiencing growing discontent among its youth, a development that could have significant implications for the party’s electoral chances in 2024.
Political analysts say this unrest signals a need for urgent engagement between political leaders and the youth to restore trust and address their genuine concerns. The NPP leadership, however, has downplayed the protest, describing it as the actions of a small, misinformed group influenced by opposition elements. Nonetheless, the message from the rally was clear—many young people are tired of empty promises and are demanding accountability and tangible improvements in their lives.
With the elections drawing nearer, political parties may need to rethink their strategies and put youth-centered development at the forefront if they hope to win the support of this increasingly vocal demographic. Source: Ghanaweb.
