Tesco has launched a new range of hot cross buns just in time for Easter. So we thought we'd give them a try and see which one we enjoyed most. The ones we opted for were apple and cinnamon; rhubarb and custard; salted caramel and chocolate and Cheddar and red Leicester - with a simnel cake thrown in for good measure.

What a feast! (Image: NQ) Here's what the team had to say: Savannah said: "I have nothing bad to say about the chocolate and salted caramel hot cross buns. "Toasted just enough to melt the chocolate and with a slather of butter, I'm also partial to a bit of peanut butter on them too; with that, you have the most delicious afternoon snack. "The artificial pink colour of the rhubarb buns really put me off though.

"Surprisingly, they tasted just like a regular hot cross bun so not at all offensive but a bit disappointing." The rhubarb and custard buns didn't look quite so fluorescent toasted (Image: NQ) James said: "As a self-confessed sceptic when it comes to 'novelty' food, I was expecting to be nauseated by the Barbie pink rhubarb buns, despite it being one of my favourite flavour combinations. "But put me in a high ponytail and a one-piece, because I thought it was tasty; the vanilla, which could have been overpowering, was actually quite subtle.

I would have liked a touch more tartness from the rhubarb, but I'm splitting hairs. "Having a savoury tooth, the cheese flavour was the one I was most anticipating - and it did not disappoint; it was like a cheesy brioche bun, and in hindsight would have been perfect toasted with butter and marmite. "Instead I chose to fill it with ketchup and sausages - a winning combo - although I would say of all the options, this is the one I'd struggle to have 'plain' with just butter.

"My favourite was the apple and cinnamon. Toasted, it evoked the flavours of an apple pie and was similar enough to a traditional hot cross bun that you got what you'd signed up for, without being so samey it defeated the point of having it." "It turns out it’s a Lent/Easter fruitcake treat. Widely eaten in England and Ireland but clearly nowhere we’ve ever been to. "It’s pretty ruddy nice too.

Very moist, and aided by layers of marzipan atop the cake and inside. A smashing bit of cake, I’d have it again in a trice but steer clear if you’re not a fan of almonds or marzipan." Lucy said: "I tried the rhubarb and custard hot cross buns, which I was specifically drawn to as they're my favourite sweets.

"I didn't notice much of a difference from your traditional hot cross bun, other than the vibrant pink colouring and the extra sweetness." Annabel said: "Don't let the rosy colour of the rhubarb hot cross bun put you off. While I couldn't particularly taste the rhubarb, it made for a very delicious mid-afternoon snack.

" Ramy said: "The salted caramel and chocolate hot cross bun was absolutely delectable, a nice balance between savoury and sweet, especially when toasted and the chocolate melts...

what a treat. "The cheese hot cross bun was quite a welcome surprise. It felt like a mix between a soft pretzel and a cheese twist.

Not my go-to, but pretty solid option." Fran said: "The hot cross bun was enjoyable; I tried the cinnamon and apple one. The cinnamon flavouring wasn't particularly noticeable, but the taste was nice overall.
