Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had renewed his commitment to coal-mine workers in the Hunter, amid a scuffle with two climate change protesters. But it was the energy transition that attracted the most attention when security guards escorted the two vocal protesters out.

They had snuck into a press conference at the hospital to raise concerns about the approval of more fossil-fuel projects. Asked about his government's position on the energy transition, Mr Albanese cited change occurring in the Hunter. "I've been to Muswellbrook and looked at the council-run facility there that is quite extraordinary, with new industries looking at innovation and start-ups," he said.

"I opened the centre there. We want to make sure that, as the transition happens, we have established the Net Zero authority. "That's about making sure no community gets left behind.

We support the coal industry." As Mr Albanese made that comment, a protester intervened saying: "Why has your government approved 33 new fossil-fuel projects". Another protester said new coal and gas projects "have to stop".

"This is the greatest health threat to the future of Australia." As they were escorted out, the Prime Minister was asked about the effect of coal job losses on the community. "We're backing new industries and jobs.

We're supporting the coal workers in the industry right now," he said. Mr Albanese said he would be attending the Mining and Energy Union conference in the Hunter Valley this afternoon. "After this, I'm speaking at their AGM.

That is an important industry. We respect those workers." On the issue of manufacturing, he said: "We think Australia can make more things here.

We want a future made in Australia. "That's why we're backing Australian manufacturing. Here in the Hunter, of course, you have such a fantastic history of making things.
