With just under two months to go until Election Day, candidates in two closely watched races — L.A.'s city council District 14 and L.

A. County district attorney — are gearing up for their last few debates. In the council race, tenants’ rights attorney Ysabel Jurado will face off against incumbent Kevin de León in at least three debates scheduled in the upcoming weeks.

The council district includes downtown L.A., Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Eagle Rock and other communities.

This is Jurado’s first campaign for City Council. De León, a former leader in the state Senate, has held the council seat since 2020. He is seeking reelection despite his involvement in a political scandal, revealed in 2022, when he was heard on secret audio recordings making racist and derogatory remarks with other city leaders.

In the race for D.A., defense attorney and former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman will face incumbent George Gascon in a debate scheduled for early next month.

Gascon, considered a leader in the criminal justice reform movement, is seeking a second term. But his policies — including not filing charges for some lower-level misdemeanors or sentencing enhancements that could add time to a person’s potential prison term —have drawn heavy criticism from inside and outside his office. Hochman has promised to reverse those policies.
