Article content The Greyhounds are down, yet defiant. Noah Morneau scored three goals as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Soo Greyhounds 7-1 at the WFCU Centre on Saturday evening. With the win, the Spitfires take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series.

Game 3 is Monday night at 7:07. “We are not going to back down,” Hounds forward Marco Mignosa said. “We have two home games and hopefully we win both at home and then it is a whole new series.

We have been through tough situations all year and just going down by two in a series isn’t going to define our year.” Mignosa failed to convert on a penalty shot at 14:52 of the first period. The score was 2-1 for Windsor at the time.

Owen Allard scored a powerplay goal at 10:16 of the first period. The Hounds converted once in five powerplay chances. “I am still very confident in this group,” Allard said.

“We are a group that doesn’t quit, so we will come ready to play.” Nolan Lalonde allowed six goals on 28 shots in 49:37. Landon Miller turned aside five of six shots in 10:23.

Carter Hicks, Ethan Garden, Liam Greentree and AJ Spellacy also scored for the Spits. Morneau scored twice in the series opener, a 7-2 victory for the Spits on Thursday night. Windsor has scored a minimum of two goals in six consecutive periods.

Joey Costanzo stopped 24 of 25 shots for the win. Heading into league action on Sunday Morneau leads the postseason in goals with five. Ilya Protas and Greentree lead the league in scoring with seven points each.

Morneau is third in scoring with six points. “We get the matchup at home as we decide who plays against them,” Dean said when asked how his team plans to limit those three players specifically. “We need to be very strategic in how we approach them.

That is the reality.” In contrast, the Soo’s struggling snipers have yet to find the net. Marco Mignosa was the team’s leading scorer in the regular season with 85 points, Brady Martin was second with 72 points and Justin Cloutier was third with 54 points.

Mignosa and Martin have one assist each. Cloutier has zero points. Again, Dean says it’s a matchup problem with the home team getting the last change.

“They have the match-up in their favour at home, so it is easy for them to key on our guys when we are on the road and that plays a part in it,” Dean said. “I think we had more than enough chances, but the puck needs to go in.” The Spits scored twice in eight power-play opportunities in Game 2.

Windsor scored once in four chances in the series opener. The Hounds went 1-4 in Game 1. In total, the Hounds were whistled for 20 minutes in penalties on Saturday night.

The home team totaled seven infractions, for a total of 14 minutes. “We can’t give a team like Windsor, with their talent up front, eight power-play chances,” Allard said. “We have to stay disciplined, but I thought there were a couple of bad calls (that went against us) Saturday.

” On goals by Morneau and Hicks the home side jumped out to a two-goal lead by 2:44 of the opening period on Saturday. “It is unacceptable,” Dean said. “You can’t post one of the best teams in the league a two-goal lead by losing puck battles and missed assignments.

” The score was 4-1 after 40 minutes. In the opener, markers by Carson Woodall and Cole Davis staked the Spits to a 2-0 lead by the 3:34 mark of the first. “We can’t be doing that as a team,” Mignosa said.

“We need better starts to games and periods.” Share this Story : 'We are not going to back down': Hounds lose 7-1 to the Spitfires in OHL playoff aciton Copy Link Email X Reddit Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr.
