NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday reacted to Donald Trump citing India's voter ID system as an example and said that the country should be "happy about it." The US President's executive order on election reforms had lauded India and Brazil's voter identification . " The interesting thing in America is that when you go to vote, you just self decline your citizenship.

In India, we have a list, ID cards, whole system where we verify that the person voting is actually a citizen. It has been going on since 1952," he said. "So for us, we have established a system that works, and certainly, there is a lot of respect around the world.

..for the American President to acknowledge India by example as a country that got this right and his country, he says has not gotten right, I think that is something we all should be happy about.

..," he added.

"Despite pioneering self-government, the United States now fails to enforce basic and necessary election protections employed by modern, developed nations, as well as those still developing. India and Brazil, for example, are tying voter identification to a biometric database , while the United States largely relies on self-attestation for citizenship," the order said. Under the new directive, states in US must prosecute election crimes and share voter lists with federal agencies or risk losing federal funding if officials fail to comply.

Furthermore, the order instructed the attorney general to prioritize enforcing federal election integrity laws in states that do not report suspected election crimes to the federal government.
