Water tanks in the way, GMDA rethinks rail overbridge plan

Gurgaon: Storage tanks of Basai water treatment plant have cast a shadow on GMDA's plan of building a railway overbridge near Sector 37. The tanks have forced the authority to explore the idea of redesigning the planned overbridge to ensure essential utilities are not affected in its construction. Last year, GMDA conducted a feasibility study and planned the two-lane overbridge.

This overbridge was aimed at improving connectivity between Sector 36, Sector 37, and Dwarka Expressway. However, the proposed railway overbridge would be a two-lane structure, approximately 400 metres in length, and it would require at least 16 metres of wide land. "Because of the existing water storage facility, sufficient space is not available for the overbridge to come up.

We may modify its design to ensure that construction can be carried out without impacting the facility," said a senior GMDA official. The authority will move forward with the tendering process after finalising the design, the official said. The new overbridge, once constructed, is expected to enhance road connectivity for Sector 37D and nearby areas, providing an alternative route for residents and businesses along the expressway.

It will also ease congestion on the existing two-lane Basai railway overbridge, which links Basai to Dhankot. Residents of various housing societies in the area, including BPTP Township, Imperial Esfera, ILD Greens, and Apex Our Homes, will have better access to the expressway due to the bridge. Currently, commuters rely on a narrow, poorly lit two-lane road built by Public Works Department (PWD).

"The road we have right now is not enough to handle the increasing traffic. We are forced to take a long detour, either through Pataudi Road or Basai Road, to reach Dwarka Expressway. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes just to pass the railway crossing.

We have been demanding an overbridge for years, and we hope GMDA does not delay the project further," said Hemant Kumar, vice president of Park Serene RWA. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Navratri Wishes , Eid Messages and quotes !.
