Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is at the top of a list he really wishes he wasn't. After recording his 87th catch of the 2024 season in his team's 30-17 win over the New England Patriots in Week 15, he became the player with the most receptions without a touchdown in a single campaign in NFL history . He broke the previous mark set by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson in 2022 (86 catches).
Since then, McBride extended that record until Saturday, when he finally found the end zone on his 98th reception of the year. On his 98th catch of the year, Trey McBride gets his first TD! : #AZvsLAR on NFL Network : Stream on #NFLPlus pic.twitter.
com/vaEpSTZawt The two-yard touchdown catch helped Arizona narrow the 10-point deficit set by the division rival Los Angeles Rams to just four (the subsequent extra point attempt was blocked). It was a promise kept by quarterback Kyler Murray, who posted a TikTok Dec. 18 encouraging fans that he would get McBride the ball for a score "soon.
" Believe it or not, Saturday's touchdown was actually McBride's third time in the end zone this year . He rushed for one touchdown and recovered a fumble for another earlier in the season. McBride has had a stellar 2024 campaign otherwise.
Saturday he became just the Cardinals' second-ever tight end to record 1,000 yards and the first since 1967 (Jackie Smith). His 98 receptions (and counting) as of halftime Saturday are also the most by a tight end in a single season in franchise history. He broke his own record of 81 catches set in 2023.
Despite all that, McBride will have to cope with the fact that his name will top the undesirable record in perpetuity until the next unlucky athlete comes along..
