Updated: September 20, 2024 8:52 AM IST By Edited by Opener Travis Head blasted the 2nd highest score by an Australian against England in ODI cricket – 154 not out off 129 balls – to guide the ODI World Cup champions to a comfortable 7-wicket win in the 1st ODI at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday (September 19). Head completed his century off only 92 balls with 14 fours and 3 sixes and then celebrated in Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legendary opener Chris Gayle’s style.

After completing his ton, Head took off his helmet and placed it on top of his handle, much like Gayle has done in the past. The Australian, who was the ‘Player of the match’ in 2023 ODI World Cup final as well, completed his 150 with a six and remained unbeaten while hitting 20 fours and 5 sixes as Mitchell Marsh’s side chased down the target with more than six overs to spare. .. An explosive 💯 but Australia will want more from their talisman opener 🔥 Travis Head brings up a ton with a celebration worthy of the feat 💪 Watch 1️⃣st ODI LIVE on 📲 — Sony LIV (@SonyLIV) It was Australia’s 13th consecutive win in ODI cricket and was made possible although the side missed plenty of regulars due to injury and illness.

“It’s never the case, I got a bit lucky at the start. Jofra (Archer) bowled a hell of a spell but when you can get through it, there are runs on offer, especially on this outfield and pitch,” Head said at the post-match presentation. “We did well to keep it at 315, used different people.

Then to survive the early spell from Jofra and build some partnerships was great. The environment is great and having a clear blueprint and role in the team. I try to enjoy what I’m doing and it is coming off for me,” the Sunrisers Hyderabad opener added.

Head’s 20 fours in the innings are also the third-most by an Australian batter after David Warner’s 24 against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016 and Glenn Maxwell’s 21 against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup match in Mumbai. The Australians were unable to select Josh Hazlewood and Glenn Maxwell due to illness, while the side also lost ODI debutant Ben Dwarshuis, who strained a pectoral muscle in the field having only bowled four overs. In spite of his premature exit, Dwarshuis did make an early impact in the match, taking 1-18, clean-bowling Phil Salt for 17 as England’s first wicket to fall.

England opener Ben Duckett blazed into the 90s before hitting a tame caught and bowled to Marnus Labuschagne on 95 (91). Labuschagne went on to finish with his best ODI bowling figures (3/39 off six overs), also claiming stand-in English skipper Harry Brook (39 off 31 balls) and Jofra Archer (4) late in the innings. “I’d love to take credit for it.

Was a forced changed, the longer their innings went on we felt pace off was the better option. I thought the way we bowled, especially our part-timers, was fantastic,” Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh said about the bowling of Labuschagne.
