The incident occurred on the night of November 10, and a video of the attack went viral on social media recently. A gang attacked the police party in Rajapalayam According to the police, Grade 1 Constables Karuppasamy and Ramkumar from Rajapalayam North Police Station were on night patrol on November 10 when they received a call from Station Writer Chellapandian. One Esakkimuthu from Inamchettikulam approached the station, complaining that Palpandi and his gang attacked him near the Panchu Market area in Rajapalayam town, and he directed them to look into the issue.
Based on the information, the constables went to Panchu Market on a two-wheeler and spotted a five-member gang in front of a bar. They enquired about Palpandi from Avarampatti, who was named by the victim Esakkimuthu. After he identified himself, the constables asked Palpandi to appear at the police station the next morning over the complaint filed by Esakkimuthu.
Even as the police team was conversing with Palpandi, some more people arrived at the spot on two-wheelers and started attacking the police personnel. They verbally abused the two constables, snatched the lathis from them, and started beating the constables black and blue. They also trampled one of the constables after he fell down.
As the situation worsened, two people known to the gang passed by and tried to calm down the situation, after which Palpandi and the gang left the spot. The constables Karuppasamy and Ramkumar suffered injuries to their wrists, shoulders, and legs since the gang thrashed them with lathis. They received treatment from Rajapalayam Govt Hospital and filed a complaint.
Based on their complaint, police filed the case under sections of 191 (2) for rioting, 296 (b) for using obscene words, 132 for using assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, 121 (1) for hurting a public servant to deter from his discharge of duty, and 351 (3) for criminal intimidation. Police nabbed the main accused Palpandi and his accomplices Kilirajan, Panjaliraja, Pandiaraj, Muthuraj, Saravanakarthik, and Vanaraj. Police are looking out for two more of his accomplices, Dharmalingam and Manikandan, who remain at large.
