By Colin McCarthy Jayson Tatum had a perfect opportunity to ice Saturday night’s game in the final seconds of regulation. He shook off the Raptors defender to take an uncontested mid-range jumper, but was well off the mark. In overtime, he got the chance to redeem himself.
And this time, Tatum left no doubts. On a broken play that saw Jaylen Brown fall to the floor with no foul called, Tatum found himself stranded well beyond the three-point line with three seconds left and counting. He had no choice but to take the long, contested jumper for the win.
And drained it. Watch the play unfold here: 🔥JAYSON TATUM HITS THE GAME WINNING BUZZER BEATER 🔥 pic.twitter.
com/GvTqgAgsUE “I missed so many shots in the second half, I was bound to make one of them,” Tatum said in his postgame interview. “JB got ran over, I thought they were going to call a foul. And I had to go make a play.
” Tatum flirted with a triple-double for the second time in as many games, notching 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. He wasn’t happy with his shooting performance in the second half, but stayed confident in his ability to take over the game. “ Joe [Mazzulla] always challenges me to dominate, however that looks,” Tatum said.
“It can look different every night. The shots not always going to fall, but are you impacting the game, are you impacting your teammates? That’s what I try to do.” With the win, Boston improves to 11-3 with a matchup against the undefeated 14-0 Cavaliers on the horizon Tuesday night.
