READ MORE: Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry on going solo: “This was born out of things that I couldn’t or wouldn’t write in the band” The Chvrches frontwoman has been gradually sharing singles since announcing her solo career last summer , and this week teased that her latest, called ‘Something In The Air’, will be arriving on October 1. The artist gave the track a live preview during one of Bleachers ’ trio of shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, where Mayberry performed as support on Thursday (September 19).

The new single kicks things up a notch from her sombre piano-led 2023 track ‘ Are You Awake? ’ and borrows some Chvrches-style melodrama after the edgy pop-leaning singles ‘ Shame ’ and ‘ Change Shapes ‘. Check out fan-shot footage of ‘Something In The Air’ below. Last year, Mayberry told NME that her new material was “born out of things that I couldn’t or wouldn’t write in the band”.

“The worst writing sessions were when I went in with someone who didn’t really understand what I was talking about and we would just write a sort of shit Chvrches song,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is a nice afternoon, but what’s the point in this?’ There’s already a universe where I can make that and I enjoy it. I don’t see why I would want to make the Tesco own brand version of that.

These are musical and lyrical things that I don’t get to do in the band or don’t feel comfortable doing in the band.” Upon announcing her solo endeavour last year, the Scottish singer-songwriter shared her hopes that her music would be a “fun, freaky, sad, weird, joyful pop playground” . Later this year, Mayberry will perform as opening support for London Grammar on their 2024 UK and European tour .
