By Conor Ryan The Celtics are swapping out their signature parquet floor for some new hardwood ahead of the 2024 NBA Cup. The “bull gang” at TD Garden installed Boston’s new court ahead of the league’s second iteration of its in-season tournament on Tuesday night. The Celtics will begin play in the 2024 NBA Cup with a matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The Celtics released footage of the installation of their new court on Monday, with the new playing surface featuring a green base with black trim along the baselines.
In addition, gold trophies are embossed both at mid-court and in the paint on both ends of the floor. You can watch the video of the TD Garden bull gang’s efforts below: Cool time lapse of the Celtics NBA Cup court being installed at TD garden (via @celtics ) pic.twitter.
com/Gk6KcJuzoE This new iteration of the Celtics’ playing surface is a lighter shade of green than last year’s court — back when the NBA Cup was tabbed as the league’s “In-Season Tournament.” The NBA Cup is an annual competition among the NBA’s 30 teams that begins with group stage play before moving onto an eight-team knockout round and an eventual neutral-site semifinal and championship round at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Celtics will compete in East Group C, which also features the Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Washington Wizards.
As part of group play, Boston will play four games to be held on “Cup Nights” every Tuesday and Friday from Nov. 12 through Dec. 3.
The team with the best standing in group Play games from each of the six groups will advance to the knockout rounds. In addition, one wild card team from each conference (the second-place finisher with the best record in Group Play games) will also move on and punch their ticket to the eight-team tournament bracket. The knockout rounds will be single-elimination games, beginning with the quarterfinals played in team venues from Dec.
10-11. Teams that advance will then face off in the semifinals in Las Vegas on Dec. 14, followed by the title game on Dec.
17. The Celtics took home the most important trophy in the NBA last season, winning their 18th championship. But Boston should also be viewed as one of the favorites for the 2024 NBA Cup this winter.
The Celtics were the top seed coming out of Group C last season, posting a 3-1 record and advancing to the knockout rounds. They were knocked out during the quarterfinals with a loss to the Pacers — with Indiana eventually losing the Lakers in the championship match.
