Carl Mullan has shared a hilariously clip from his first day as a newsreader way back in his college days. The Dublin native is a firm fixture in the 2FM roster, having presented the Breakfast Show in some capacity since 2019. It was a hard graft for Carl, however, who started at at the station as a media content coordinator before getting the chance to fill in for the main presenters.
Carl also gained a lot of his experience while at college at the former Institute of Technology Tallaght . Among his roles in college radio at IITFM, Carl was a newsreader and has now shared a clip from his first day on the job. The clip hears Carl beginning to read the headlines before a little giggle escaping mid-sentence.
While Carl gets to the end of the sentence, and continues there is a number of breaks between words as he seemingly tries to get composure. A post shared by Carl Mullan (@carlmullan) Unfortunately, the budding broadcaster is unable to get said composure, with someone heard laughing at him in the background and his co-presenter jumping in to take over. Hilariously, the co-presenter — who Carl named as Grace Mulvey — isn’t much more composed and can be heard giggling and then going into a screech as she tries to get through the headlines.
‘Excuse me, sorry,’ she said, ‘We’re having some technical problems.’ Carl shared the clip and confirmed: ‘Yes this genuinely happened and yes it went out on air. ‘Thank you to the incredibly professional @gracemulveycomedy for stepping in and trying to save me on the day.
’ Social media users took to the comments expressing their appreciation at the hilarious moment. One said: ‘Quite possible the greatest use of “technical problems” in history,’ while another wondered: ‘Can you remember what started the giggles? Grace Mulvey, who is now a comedienne, joked: ‘I still don’t know what technical problems actually means.’ Fortunately, the blunder was more of a character-building learning curve for Carl and didn’t impact his future career.
After some time with 2FM, Carl got his break presenting Weekend Breakfast alongside Aifric O’Connell, before making the move to the week day show in 2019 alongside Donncha O’Callaghan and Doireann Garrihy . Following Donncha and Doireann’s shock exits from the station, Carl was reunited with Aifric for a stint. From February, the weekday breakfast show will see more changes as Roz Purcell and Spin 1038;s Aisling Bonner joins Carl for a new show .
