Warned pubs & bars against serving liquor to minors: Pune police chief

Pune: City police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Monday warned pubs and bars against serving liquor to minors as citizens gear up to usher in the New Year. The police control room will monitor festivities at crowded places like junctions and streets via 1, 400 CCTV cameras to ensure safe celebrations. The police chief said 23 checkpoints would be activated to intercept vehicles of people indulging in drunken driving .

"Officers from local police station have visited pubs, resto-bars, and other establishments where New Year's parties will be hosted and warned them against serving liquor to minors," he said. The police have been executing a sustained drive against drunken driving since the May 19 Porsche crash, with more than 5,000 motorists fined so far. Besides, strict action would also be taken against wrong-side and triple-seat driving and people creating ruckus on the streets.



Over 3,000 police personnel will keep a close eye on the celebrations, Kumar said. Govt has extended closing deadlines of the establishments till 5am on Jan 1. "We sealed an establishment in Koregaon Park for repeatedly violating the closing deadline of 1.

30am on Saturday. We have told the establishments that they should pull down shutters at 5am on Jan 1," he said. "There are over 40 events in the city, and we have identified 17 spots where people gather in large numbers, such as MG Road, where enhanced patrolling will be carried out," he said.

Police teams will also keep an eye on illegal trade of narcotic substances, drugs and unauthorised parties. The traffic police will remain armed with breathalysers. "We will also act against the misleading advertisement done by such establishments to attract customers," he said.
