A residential home has received a glowing report from the Care Inspectorate. The document follows an unannounced June inspection of Cathay Nursing Home on St Leonard's Road, Forres - caring for up to 41 people at a time - when inspectors interviewed 10 people using the service and 10 members of their family, as well as staff and management. Regional director Kristin Jackson-Brown confirmed the home is run by the Care Concern Group.
She said: “We are delighted to have Cathay recognised with grade 4’s across all five quality themes. “Cathay offers a warm and inviting home-from-home environment. Visitors are always welcomed and find a happy, relaxed environment that is family-friendly, inclusive and filled with laughter.
” A six point scale was used for the review, where 1 is unsatisfactory and 6 is excellent. Cathay rated 4 (Good) for each section, covering wellbeing, leadership, staff, setting, care and support. Key findings of the report included: people receive the right care and support to help them look their best; people are very positive about meals and the dining experience is relaxed and sociable; people are very positive about the staff and say they are kind and caring; managers are visible and people are confident that any concern is dealt with appropriately; staff are generally visible and attentive; the home is clean and odour free; a programme of upgrades to shared rooms and areas is underway; and care plans and assessments are detailed and person-centred.
Ms Jackson-Brown said: “Our management and team work get to know each resident and their loved one to ensure we support the best outcomes for all. “The team is always available and holds regular meetings, social events and activities for all to participate in. These include a very successful summer barbecue, gardening club, upcoming curry night, and much more.
“Residents friends and families are very much a part of our Cathay community and are welcome to visit at any time.” Positive aspects highlighted in the report included: designated activities staff ensure an activities programme is in place; a café developed by staff benefits people who prefer a quieter dining environment; people mobilise freely and choose where they want to spend time; staff demonstrate good awareness in supporting people to live well with dementia; relatives are confident in the management team; people say staff are kind, caring and humorous; bedrooms had been personalised to a good standard helping to create a warm, welcoming and familiar setting; improvements to the lounge and hairdresser have been completed to a very good standard; people do not have to wait for their care and support needs to be attended to; staff are able to provide the right care and support to reduce any stress or anxiety. Ms Jackson-Brown said: “As part of our ongoing plans to enhance the facilities and lifestyle available to our residents, we have already upgraded the lounge, café and hairdressing salon.
“Our next phase will see the implementation of a sensory room and making the conservatory into a quiet lounge.” She added: “Our extensive activities programme is aligned to residents' likes and interests but also offers the chance to try something new. There’s baking, gardening, armchair travel themed with different countries and cuisine, resident-led daily exercise classes, weekly church services, knitting club, arts and crafts, games, lunch club, book club and much more.
” Two areas for improvement were raised by the inspectors: more effort is required to keep nails clean and trimmed; and staff should ensure that everyone is offered the same opportunities to be included in activities. “Our residents are at the heart of everything we do,” finished Ms Jackson-Brown. “We’re always working to continuously improve our care provision and we’re delighted to have Deena Jacobs our new manager.
