St Kilda's says winning the ball is the main area to improve after his debut season. or signup to continue reading The product made an immediate impact, kicking two goals in the eight-point loss to Geelong in round one and followed that with a Rising Star nomination from 15 disposals against Western Bulldogs in round six. "The main thing is my contest work, hopefully I will eventually be an inside mid here," he said during half-time of Rovers' preliminary final against North Albury last Sunday.

Wilson was selected by the Saints at No. 18 in the AFL Draft from Rovers and Murray Bushrangers. He played 23 games and kicked 15 goals as a forward.

"I've loved my time here, working closely with (two-time Brownlow medallist) Robert Harvey and Lenny Hayes, as well as (coach) Ross (Lyon), I'm pinching myself every day," he suggested. Wilson, who turned 19 last month, was involved in the tackle which saw red-hot Rising Star favourite Harley Reid suspended for two weeks and ruled ineligible for the award. "I was running down the wing and saw someone come across, I thought I should try to step him or fend off and looked up and saw it was Harley, probably not the best bloke to try and fend off," Wilson said of the fellow youngster with the most lethal fend in the game.

"I was caught in-between the two, he laid a good tackle and the media made a lot out of what it was, but I still get along really well with him." The pair started playing together at under 12 representative level. Wilson will attend Sunday's Ovens and Murray Football Netball League grand final as the AFL Ambassador.

He will present the premiership Cup to league officials prior to the Rovers-Yarrawonga football clash at Lavington Sportsground. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. WEEKLY The latest news, results & expert analysis.
