The ALS Association was in town on the morning of Nov. 2 for their fourth and final Walk to Defeat ALS event at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Five teams supporting those affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis gathered to help raise funds for research, including Miles for McDermott, We Gotcha, Ron's ALS Slayers, Bet on Brett and DeCosta Strong.
At 11 a.m., the groups walked around the park displaying signs and t-shirts in the collective effort to find a cure for the rare, progressive and fatal neurodegenerative condition impacting 30,000 Americans.
Those battling ALS experience a gradual loss of muscle control, depriving them of the ability to perform routine movements. ALS Association South Carolina Development Manager Meagan Davies told the Moultrie News that there medications to help address the symptoms of Lou Gehrig's Disease while research to identify a cure is ongoing. "The main thing that we provide are support groups.
We have different ways we can help patients, whether it's getting them access to wheelchairs or different doctor's appointments ...
and answer questions they may have along the way," said Davies. Participants at the annual gathering were treated to t-shirts, food and an Unlock ALS key/lanyard set. To find out more about resources available to individuals and families impacted by ALS, visit ALS.
