If you are looking for a "twisty-turny, edge-of-your-seat" crime thriller, then new BBC drama The One That Got Away could be the one for you. The six-part series is aiming to be the next big bingeable boxset for fans of Broadchurch and will hit screens on Tuesday, February 25 on BBC One and nationallly on BBC Four from March 1..
The drama is written by Catherine Tregenna, (Law & Order UK, DCI Banks, Casualty, Doctor Who) and features an all-Welsh cast, including Hinterland's Richard Harrington and Elen Rhys (The Mallorca Files) in the lead roles. Coronation Street's Ian Puleston-Davies, Rhian Blythe and The Day of the Jackal's also star in The One That Got Away. Set in a Welsh seaside town, the series follows DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) as she teams up with her former lover, DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) as they investigate the murder of a nurse.
As well as stirring up old scars within the community as doubts about an old conviction arise, the killing also forces the two detectives to confront their unresolved issues. There's also the unsettling possibility that a copycat killer could be on the loose in the town. The synopsis for the series reads: "Written by Catherine Tregenna (Law & Order UK, Lewis, DCI Banks), and directed by Sion Ifan (Y Goleudy), this psychologically driven thriller delves into the complex relationship between Rick and Ffion as they confront not only a killer but also the unresolved issues of their past.
The murder stirs up old wounds in the small community, casting doubt on a historic conviction and raising the chilling possibility of a copycat killer. The series offers a forensic examination of a town, a killer, and a love affair – both past and present." The series was filmed on location in Pembroke Dock and south Wales.
The premise of the series may sound familiar to some as The One That Got Away is the English-language version of Cleddau, which aired on S4C last year. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter "Coming home to Wales to film was a joy—immersing myself in everything Welsh," said Elen Rhys. "Catherine Tregenna's writing blew me away.
It's not your typical crime drama; it goes much deeper. I love that there are no heroes, the characters are complex, damaged, and human; everyone is as flawed as the next. It's so true to life.
To me, it’s a drama about what it means to be human." Nick Andrews, head of commissioning for BBC Cymru Wales, added: “The One That Got Away is a knotty, twisty-turny, edge-of-your-seat thriller interwoven with an electrifying love story, featuring a fantastic Welsh cast. BBC Cymru Wales is so pleased to be able to offer this excellent Cymru Noir to our audiences.
You’ll be gripped and quivering all at once – nail-biting stuff.” The first episode will air on BBC One Wales at 9:10pm, on February 25, and all episodes will be available to view on BBC iPlayer. A double-bill of the first two episodes will air on BBC Four on March 1, St David's Day.
