Wait, what are the GOP’s values again?

I don’t know what Republican values are anymore. Law and order used to be important, but “patriots” who assault policemen are pardoned, and thousands of people in critical jobs are fired without forethought, leaving their work in shambles and putting Americans’ safety at risk. Integrity and respect for others have been important, but today mistreating women doesn’t disqualify someone for a government job.

Lying is okay — as long as it bends truth the desired way. What happened to compassion, a Christian value shared by most religions? It has given way to cruelty and indifference: The richest cut off food for the poorest, funds are stripped from safety-net programs to pay for tax cuts that benefit the wealthy, immigrants are denied legal rights and basic human rights, people with different views are called Marxists or evil. Surely, these are not the new Republican values.



I’ve always been proud to be an American because of our shared aspirations and values. I grieve for what we seem to be losing and what we may become..
