THE Waghi Tumbe semi-professional club, the pride of the Jiwaka province are set to do better in this season’s Digicel ExxonMobil Cup. This is from board chairman Jim Kalne who said this during the presentation of the jerseys to the players before the kick-off of the round one game between against Bintangor Goroka Lahanis at the Minj Golf Club last Friday evening. Kalne said Waghi Tumbe was the Jiwaka people’s franchise team and it was good to see the team finish on a high note last year, despite not making the finals.

Kalne thanked the major sponsor Jiwaka Provincial Government and Asila Security Limited (ASL) for supporting the franchise. “It is money well spent on the players,” he added. The management of the team includes Paias Opur (team manager), Kupun Wisil (head coach), Tony Dai (assistant coach), Max Tiri (technical advisor) and Norman Mavi (head trainer).

Wisil said the players were selected out of the Jiwaka Governor’s Cup competition. Former PNG Kumul Max Tiri said there was a lot of work for them to work on if they are to be a threat this season. Tiri added that the onus is on everybody to contribute effectively for the betterment of the team.
