Here are this month's nominees. Be sure to vote in the poll below.Appleton East girls basketballThe Patriots advanced to the WIAA state tournament before losing to Kimberly, 55-34, in the Division 1 semifinals at the Resch Center.
The sixth-seeded Patriots beat No. 1 seed Eau Claire Memorial, 68-65, in double overtime in the sectional final after beating No. 2 seed Stevens Point, 75-72, in overtime in the sectional semifinals.
East finished the season with a 19-9 overall record.Freedom boys basketballThe Irish made it to the Division 3 state championship game before losing to Milwaukee Academy of Science, 57-54, to finish as the state runner-up. The Irish beat Elk Mound, 66-32, in the semifinal game.
Freedom advanced to the state tournament with a 49-34 victory over North Eastern Conference rival Little Chute. The Irish finished the season with a 28-2 record.Kaukauna wrestlingThe Ghosts won the Division 1 state team wrestling title for the fifth year in a row.
They beat West Allis Hale, 62-17, in the quarterfinals and Holmen, 40-22, in the semifinals before a 54-13 victory over Arrowhead in the championship match. It was the ninth team title for Kaukauna and came after the Ghosts sent six wrestlers to the state individual tournament, with all six making it on the podium.Kimberly girls basketballThe Papermakers won the Division 1 state championship with a 47-26 victory over Muskego in the championship game, after beating Appleton East, 55-34, in the semifinals.
It was the fifth state title for the Papermakers. Kimberly, which finished the season with a 29-1 record, made it to state by beating Notre Dame, 57-38, in the regional final, Hartford, 56-55, in the sectional semifinal and Pewaukee, 48-47, in overtime in the sectional final.Little Chute boys track and fieldThe Mustangs took first place as a team in Division 2 at the UW-Oshkosh Small Schools Invitational indoor track meet at Kolf Sports Center on March 20.
Little Chute scored 59 points to outpace second-place Omro (49).Neenah girls track and fieldThe Rockets took first place at the Ripon College Invitational on March 25. Neenah scored 80 points, with Kimberly second with 75 points.
The Rockets also finished third at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on March 18 and took second place at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational on March 21.St. Mary Catholic girls basketballThe Zephyrs advanced to the Division 4 state championship game before losing to Cuba City, 53-50, to take second place.
SMC, which finished the season with a 26-4 record, advanced to the title game with a 58-45 semifinal win over Durand-Arkansaw. The Zephyrs advanced to state with a 65-54 sectional final win over Big East rival Manitowoc Lutheran.Xavier girls basketballThe Hawks reached the Division 3 state tournament and advanced to the championship game before losing to Oostburg, 49-36.
Xavier beat No. 1 seed Elk Mound, 45-35, in the semifinals. Xavier advanced to state by beating No.
1 seed Winneconne, 44-38, in the sectional semifinal and another No. 1 seed, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 63-45, in the sectional final. The Hawks finished the season with a 19-11 record.
