Volleyball roundup: Ranked win eludes Willmar Cardinals

Prep volleyball report for Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, in west central Minnesota. Alexandria gets the CLC sweep in a matchup of top-10 teams

WILLMAR — The Willmar volleyball team took its first Central Lakes Conference loss of the season to rival Alexandria on Thursday. Willmar made it tight throughout, but Alex left the Big Red Gym with a sweep, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22. Thursday’s match was a showdown of top teams in Class AAA.

Willmar is ranked fourth in the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Alex is ranked eighth. Gretchen Volk was Willmar’s top attacker.



The senior outside hitter had 10 kills and 10 digs, both team highs. Brielle Ogdahl and Nora Mitteness each finished with eight kills, with Ogdahl adding nine digs and a team-best two ace serves. Ellery DeBoer had 30 set assists as seven different Willmar players finished with kills.

Willmar resumes conference play against St. Cloud Tech at 7 p.m.

Tuesday in St. Cloud. Central Lakes Alexandria 3, Willmar 0 Wright County Watertown-Mayer 3, NLS 1 Tied at 1-1, Watertown-Mayer closed the door on New London-Spicer by winning the next two sets in a Wright County Conference victory at Watertown.

Hannah Nieland had 22 set assists, 11 digs and an ace serve for the Wildcats. Ayla Caskey had a team-high 12 kills and two ace blocks. Piper Barney added 10 kills, 14 digs and a pair of ace blocks.

NLS plays Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in non-conference play at 7 p.m. Monday at Grove City.

Camden RCW 3, Ortonville 0 Holly and Mackenna Hinderks each had double-digit kills in Renville County West’s sweep over host Ortonville. Holly led the way with 16 kills along with eight digs, three ace serves and two ace blocks. Mackenna followed with 13 kills, six digs and an ace serve.

Setter Johanna Braun tallied 36 set assists and four ace serves. RCW plays in the Sibley East Invitational at 9 a.m.

Saturday in Arlington. Canby 3, KMS 0 Third-ranked (Class A) Canby secured a Camden Conference sweep over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Kerkhoven. Emily Wagner and Madison Silas led the Fighting Saints with seven kills apiece.

Leah Wagner finished with 10 set assists, followed by eight from Ava Noble. KMS plays Yellow Medicine East for a conference match at 7:15 p.m.

Tuesday at Granite Falls. LQPV 3, Lakeview 1 Lac qui Parle Valley recorded a Camden Conference win over Lakeview at Madison. Brandi Meyer had a strong all-around night with 23 kills, 21 digs, three blocks and an ace serve.

Maya Sawatzky finished with 40 set assists, 10 digs, three ace serves and an ace block. LQPV plays host to Benson for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.

Friday at Madison. CMCS 3, TMB 1 Central Minnesota Christian held off Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in a Camden Conference North/South division cross-over match at Prinsburg. Emmi Braem was the Bluejays’ top attacker with 14 kills and 14 digs.

Behind her was Maddy Vander Ark with 13 kills and 15 digs. Reece Duininck had six of CMCS’ 14 ace serves. The Bluejays face Renville County West in continuation of its conference schedule at 7:15 p.

m. Tuesday at Renville. YME 3, Dawson-Boyd 1 After a 1-1 split of the first two sets, Yellow Medicine East won the next two to beat the Blackjacks at Dawson.

Bailey Bothun collected 23 set assists for Dawson-Boyd. Addy Tufto and Kadyn Perkins each had eight kills. Dawson-Boyd plays Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in a conference match at 7:15 p.

m. Tuesday at Tracy. YME hosts Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg as it continues conference play at 7:15 p.

m. Tuesday at Granite Falls. West Central Minnewaska 3, WCA 1 Dacia Fleury and Mya VanLuik led Minnewaska’s versatile attack in the Lakers’ win at Barrett.

Fleury and VanLuik each contributed 17 kills for Minnewaska. Fleury had a team-best 21 digs. Minnewaska’s Haillie Schulz dished out 40 set assists and tacked on 14 digs.

Berlynn Green and Emma Poegel also reached double figures in digs as both had 12. The Lakers host Montevideo for a conference match at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at Glenwood. Benson 3, Montevideo 1 Montevideo took the first set before Benson rattled off three straight set wins to beat the Thunder Hawks at Montevideo. Carly Tolifson paced the Braves.

She had a team-high nine kills and added 19 digs. Also for Benson, Julia Claussen recorded a team-best 29 set assists and Sophie Krusemark tallied a team-high 21 digs. For Montevideo, Raegyn Glady led the way with 15 digs.

Jillian Magnuson and Payton Howell each added 10 digs. Benson plays Lac qui Parle Valley in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.

Friday at Madison. The Thunder Hawks host Minnewaska for a conference match at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at Montevideo. Sauk Centre 3, BOLD 0 Kenley Elfering had 13 set assists and 11 digs in BOLD’s three-set loss at Sauk Centre. Zoey Lippert led the Warriors’ attack with seven kills.

Peyton Sander added four more.BOLD hosts Morris/Chokio-Alberta for a conference match at 7:15 p.m.

Thursday at Olivia. Central Minnesota Paynesville 3, Royalton 2 Ava Martinson’s 20 kills helped the Bulldogs to a comeback win against Royalton at Paynesville. Martinson, a sohpomore outside hitter, added 12 digs for a double-double.

Kaydence Roeske and Rayna Spanier also had double-doubles for the Bulldogs. Roeske, a senior outside hitter, recorded 30 digs and 11 kills. Spanier, a senior setter, notched 43 set assists and 18 digs.

Grace Roberg, a senior libero, anchored Paynesville’s defense with a team-high 49 digs. The Bulldogs host Holdingford for a conference match at 7 p.m.

Thursday at Paynesville. BBE 3, ACGC 0 Kacey Fischer, Kamie Fischer and Adley Hagen each had double-doubles in Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s rout of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Brooten. Kacey Fischer had team-highs of 15 kills and 13 digs for the Jaguars.

Kamie Fischer had 12 set assists and 10 kills and Adley Hagen tacked on 11 kills and 10 digs. Ruby Klinger led the Falcons with seven kills. Avary Bierwerth had nine set assists and six digs.

BBE hosts Eden Valley-Watkins for a conference match at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brooten.

ACGC hosts New London-Spicer for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Monday at Grove City.
