Volleyball roundup: MACCRAY knocks out CMCS in Section 3A

Wolverines prevail 3-1 over Bluejays before a huge crowd at Clara City. Other playoff winners Friday: RCW, Canby, Paynesville, Litchfield, Eden Valley-Watkins, BBE and Sauk Centre

CLARA CITY — A pair of powerhouse hitters showed up in a mammoth way for the MACCRAY volleyball team before a jam-packed crowd in its playoff opener. Juniors Brielle Janssen and Emma Thein combined for 42 kills in the Wolverines’ four-set victory against Central Minnesota Christian School on Friday. Third-seeded MACCRAY won 25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-14 over the sixth-seeded Bluejays in the Section 3A-North quarterfinal match.

MACCRAY, which also beat CMCS (16-10) in five sets in a Camden Conference regular season matchup on Oct. 8, advances to play No. 2 Canby in the Section 3A-North semifinals at 7 p.



m. Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The Lancers swept Lac qui Parle Valley on Friday night in Canby.

Janssen’s presence loomed large for the Wolverines, who improved to 23-8. The 2023 Class A All-State member knocked down 26 kills and added 14 digs, two ace serves and an ace block. Thein was effective under Jannsen’s leading effort.

She also posted a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs with a team-best three ace serves. Sophomores Sam Hultgren and Kailee Rosendahl orchestrated MACCRAY’s attack. Hultgren pieced together 24 set assists and Rosendahl tacked on 22 set assists.

Emmi Braem, a junior setter/right-side hitter, led the Bluejays with 13 kills and 16 digs. Sienna Duininck, a sophomore setter/right-side hitter, dished out 21 set assists and had nine digs. Aurora Rosen, a sophomore libero, recorded 11 digs.

Section 3A-North MACCRAY 3, CMCS 1 RCW 3, Wabasso 1 Fifth-seeded Renville County West used 17 kills by Mackenna Hinderks and 14 kills from Holly Hinderks to trip up the fourth-seeded Rabbits at Wabasso. Johanna Braun contributed 38 set assists, Anna Roxberg had five ace blocks and Ella Ridl added 11 digs for the Jaguars. RCW advances to play No.

1 Minneota in the Section 3A-North semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

Minneota beat No. 8 Lakeville 25-14, 25-15, 25-13. Canby 3, LQPV 0 Second-seeded Canby topped seventh-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley 26-24, 25-11, 26-24 at Canby.

No. 2 Canby advances to play No. 3 MACCRAY at 7 p.

m. Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. Section 3AA-North Paynesville 3, Montevideo 0 Ava Martinson had nine kills and Finley Anfinson and Emma Kolstad each added seven in No.

2 Paynesville’s sweep of No. 7 Montevideo at Paynesville. Rayna Spanier recorded 29 set assists for the Bulldogs, who got 11 digs apiece from Grace Roberg and Kaydence Roeske.

Paynesville is host to No. 3 Eden Valley-Watkins in the Section 3AA-North semifinals at 7 p.m.

Tuesday. Litchfield 3, Morris/CA 2 Fifth-seeded Litchfield won the last two sets to beat No. 4 Morris/Chokio-Alberta at Morris.

The Dragons beat the Tigers 19-25, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24, 15-8. Litchfield advances to play top-seeded New London-Spicer in the Section 3AA-North semifinals at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at New London. EVW 3, KMS 0 Third-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins knocked off Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 victory at Eden Valley. No.

3 EVW advances to play at No. 2 Paynesville in the Section 3AA-North semifinals at 7 p.m.

Tuesday. For KMS, Lily Winter had seven kills and two blocks. Madison Silas and Emily Wagner each had five kills.

Ava Nobel added 17 digs and nine set assists. Leah Wagner had 15 digs and seven set assists. Section 6A-South BBE 3, CGB 0 Top-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa swept No.

4 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at Brooten. For BBE, Adley Hagen had 16 kills and nine digs. Kamie Fischer added 35 set assists and Kacey Fischer contributed 15 kills and 16 digs.

Ava Deters had 21 digs for the Jaguars. No. 1 BBE advances to play No.

2 West Central Area in the Section 6A-South finals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Fergus Falls.

West Central beat No. 7 Parkers Prairie 25-14 25-20 25-21. Section 6AA Sauk Centre 3, Minnewaska 0 Second-seeded Sauk Centre swept No.

7 Minnewaska at Sauk Centre. Minnewaska was led by Dacia Fleury’s seven kills and Haillie Schulz’s 14 set assists, 10 digs and two service aces. No.

2 Sauk Centre advances to play No. 3 Royalton in the Section 6AA semifinals at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday at Sauk Rapids. Royalton beat No. 6 Holdingford 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.
