The volleyball teams of Roswell, Goddard and Dexter all were eliminated in the state tournament in Rio Rancho on Friday. The double-elimination tournament began on Thursday as the three local teams looked to continue their march toward a state title. Roswell, who was the fifth seed in Class 5A, lost their first match against No.
12 Sandia in five sets (20-25, 25-15, 15-25, 25-21, 15-7). The Lady Coyotes could not rebound on Friday in an elimination match against the No. 6 seed Santa Fe, losing in three sets (25-20, 27-25, 25-20).
Roswell finishes their best season this decade at 22-3. In Class 4A, the ninth seed Goddard lost on Thursday to No. 8 Valley in four sets (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23).
On Friday, the Lady Rockets were eliminated by No. 2 Albuquerque Academy in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-14). Goddard finishes their season at 12-13 overall.
In Class 3A, the No. 10 seed Dexter lost to No. 7 Santa Fe Indian School on Thursday in three sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-23).
Facing elimination on Friday, the Lady Demons won the first set against No. 9 Sandia Prep, but they could not stave off elimination and lost in four sets (19-25, 25-17, 25-6, 25-21). Dexter finishes the season at 18-7.
Gateway Christian won two matches in Bernalillo to get to the Class 1A semifinals on Saturday. On Thursday, the Lady Warriors defeated No. 7 Fort Sumner/House in four sets (17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14).
On Friday, a berth in the state semifinals was on the line for the winner and Gateway defeated No. 3 Quemado in straight sets (25-20, 25-8, 25-23). On Saturday, the scene shifted to Rio Rancho and the Lady Warriors looked to get to the state title match for the fifth straight season.
All Gateway had to do was get through the No. 1 Logan Lady Longhorns to get to their second state title in school history. The match on Court 4 at the Rio Rancho Events Center was memorable as it went the full five sets, but the Lady Warriors could not finish the task and were eliminated two matches shy of their goal of a state championship (25-20, 19-25, 24-26, 31-29, 16-14).
In the other Class 1A semifinal on Saturday, which took place on Court 3 while Gateway was in action on Court 4, No. 3 Quemado, who Gateway beat to advance to the semifinals on Friday, took advantage of their second chance and held off a late charge from No. 4 Melrose to win in five sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 24-26, 17-15).
Gateway finishes the season at 22-4. Quemado, looking for their first state title since 1977, and Logan, playing for their fourth title in the last decade after winning three straight titles from 2017-19, played for the Class 1A state title on Saturday evening. A final result was not available at press time.
