A "violent predator" has been found guilty of murder after stabbing a loving grandfather in his own home. Sukhit Bains, 46, stabbed pensioner Michael Martin in a sustained attacked, killing the 72-year-old in his own home. Bains then tried to hide his crimes, wiping the murder weapon clean and hiding blood stains on a rug.
He was found guilty of murder by a jury in a trial in London. A jury at Isleworth Crown Court heard how Bains, of Brighton Road in Southgate near Crawley, had been an acquaintance of Mr Martin. He stabbed the pensioner in his flat in St Botolph's Road in Worthing on March.
Mr Martin's body was found by a family member in his flat on the evening of March 22. In a bid to conceal the murder Bains wiped clean a bloodied knife, turned over a blood-stained rug and put his own blood stained clothes in the washing machine. Bains was later arrested in Crawley and charged with murder.
He was found guilty yesterday. In a statement released through Sussex Police, Mr Martin's family paid tribute to their dad as "our hero" who "taught us to love, to be kind, and to always look after each other". He has taken away the last precious years we had with our dad and grandad. “This act is something we will never be able to comprehend or forgive. “Our dad always had time for people, found solace in making friends, and would do anything to help anyone.
“We had the best dad in the world. There are simply no words to describe the level of pain and loss we continue to feel." Bains will be sentenced in Isleworth on November 1.
Sussex Police Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama said: “This was a distressing case, and our thoughts continue to be with the family and loved-ones of Mr Martin. “Bains carried out a sustained and violent attack upon him in his home. “We were determined to get answers for Mr Martin’s family and to ensure that Bains was brought to justice.
“I would like to say thank you to the witnesses who have come forward and to the public for supporting our complex investigation. “We are pleased that the jury has found Bains guilty of this crime , and he now faces sentencing.”.
