Village looks to become a pro-housing community

CATSKILL — The village Board of Trustees took a step in addressing the local housing crisis by adopting the Pro-Housing Communities pledge during its meeting on Wednesday.

The Pro-Housing Communities pledge involves streamlining the permitting process for multifamily, affordable, accessible, and supportive housing, as well as adopting policies that actively promote fair housing, expand development capacity for residential purposes, and implementing policies that encourage a diverse range of housing options, Board of Trustees Vice President Natasha Law said. “We want to make it very apparent that housing is important to the board,” Law said. “We believe that supporting housing production of all kinds in our community will bring multiple benefits.

” Adopting the Pro-Housing Communities pledge supports the idea that walkable communities will create more opportunities, she added. “To even apply for the DRI-NY Program and move forward with it, we need to be a Pro-Housing Community,” Law said. “We are in the process of applying for the grant.

I’ll be sending our letter of intent this week.” The DRI-NY Program supports the revitalization of downtown areas in smaller and rural communities. It will begin in mid-October, and it is the initial step in the process, Law said.

The grant is due at the end of October or mid-October, Law said. “It’s just the beginning of the process,” she added. “I sent them an email to let them [DRI-NY] know we might pass this resolution tonight, and we did.

Now we can move forward.”.
