Brompton Carnival and Sports, near Northallerton, which has been serving the community for 112 years, is in jeopardy for future years, due to the lack of committee members and volunteers. Despite successfully running the event during the last May Bank Holiday weekend with the main event taking place on the Bank Holiday Monday for more than a century, next year's carnival is not guaranteed after the current committee admitted it "wouldn't last forever". Brompton Carnival and Sports (Image: BROMPTON CARNIVAL) Karen Waring, who has been one of the committee members for the event for the last 14 years, says that she and fellow committee members have issued a plea to find volunteers to "breathe new life" into the carnival.
Karen, who became a committee member after answering an appeal for new blood 14 years, says that the role is "rewarding" - and has called on the next generation to pick up the gauntlet. She said: "For a long time, we have successfully run the event, but we've had enough after looking after it for such a long time. "It's got to the stage where most of the committee and volunteers are over 60, and we want to scale things back.
" Despite setting out the real possibility of the event not happening in 2026, Karen has offered a glimmer of hope for its future after confirming that three people are interested in volunteering and committee roles. "We've had a little interest - but we need more people to come forward.
Six people would be an ideal number." Karen hope to stage a village meeting in Brompton in the next few months, where the current committee can issue a plea for volunteers and new members. Brompton Carnival and Sports are looking for both people to join the committee and help behind the scenes.
