Fortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz will bring Motzart's piano to Aiken. Vienna-based Maltz will perform on a 1792 Viennese fortepiano at 3 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 10. The Viennese fortepiano is the early piano as Mozart and Beethoven knew it.

Viennese fortepianos are the pianos for which Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven wrote their piano music. They are very different from modern pianos in that they are smaller, more intimate instruments and their technical characteristics make them the ideal instrument upon which to play Classical-era music. The concert is part of Maltz’s 70-city North American tour.

“Hearing these pieces on a Viennese fortepiano helps the music come alive in a new, extraordinary way” says Maltz, adding, “I’ll introduce each piece and, post- concert, the audience can ask me questions and see this rare instrument up close.” “We are thrilled to welcome Daniel Adam Maltz back to Aiken for what will be a very memorable and moving performance for all who are able to come,” said Caroline Gwinn, executive director of the Aiken Center for the Arts. “These composers weren’t figures in a dusty history book," said Maltz.

"They were flesh-and-blood humans using music to communicate deep emotions that are still very relatable today.” Maltz is based in Vienna, Austria, but his roots are in Aiken. He is a prior member of the Aiken Youth Orchestra and his father, Richard Maltz, is distinguished professor emeritus of composition and music theory at USC Aiken.

Maltz is devoted to performing on the historic Viennese fortepianos used by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven — utilizing the vast range of tones and colors familiar to the composers. He studied historical performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at Vienna’s University for Music and Performing Arts. He has appeared in concert throughout the U.

S., Europe and Australia, and made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 22. He brings his expertise in the Viennese sound, culture, philosophies and practices of the era to his interpretations.
