Vic Schaefer approached journalists in a vastly different way than Kim Mulkey , especially after a loss. In the SEC Tournament final , Schaefer's Texas squad had a less-than-stellar outing, falling to Dawn Staley and South Carolina 64-45. It was a tough night for the Longhorns, who were held to 29.
6 percent shooting from the field and 12.5 percent from 3-point land by the Gamecocks. The Longhorns had no answer for Chloe Kitts , who led all scorers with 15 points.
And yet despite the tough loss, Schaefer remained gracious in defeat, especially as he saw student journalists who made the trek to South Carolina to cover the team, giving them their flowers for their commitment to the job. "So, if I'm not mistaken, are y'all my three that drove 16 hours?" Schaefer said to a group of student journalists working for The Daily Texan before giving them immense praise. "I want y'all to know, when it comes time to get a job, you put me on your resume.
"That's really unique. And I'm proud that you guys are here, and I'm proud that you take enough pride in your job that you would do that, because you don't have to do that. And I think people need to know that, so thank you for being here.
" Schaefer's interaction is in stark contrast wth how Mulkey approached and talked with journalists after an LSU loss. After losing to Schaefer and Texas in the semifinal of the same tournament, Mulkey had a tense moment with a media member during the press conference. A media member, Lulu Kesin, was on the side eating a snack when Mulkey specifically called her out.
"Are those media over there, or are they just eating," Mulkey said as she pointed out Kesin. Kesin took to social media to defend herself after Mulkey's comment, posting: "Sitting far away from the press conference, I was off to the side writing when Kim Mulkey saw me take a bite of my mozzarella stick," before posting an image of where she was situated in relation to Mulkey's position. Meanwhile for Staley, South Carolina's head coach gave Schaefer and Texas credit while also acknowledging that the Gamecocks' championship pedigree made all the difference. "And I know that come the next few years, Texas is going to be right back here," she told reporters . "I'm not saying that they weren't prepared.
It's just, you know, to win a national championship, you've got to have been to a Final Four and experienced all the things that come with it. And then if you ever get a chance to go back, you just right some of the ---- that needs to be righted. "You get overly excited.
You get so close to the goal and then something trips you up. When you've gone through that process, it doesn't trip you up. And I'm not saying that's what happened to Texas, y'all.
I'm just giving you all my experience with being here and being at a Final Four.".
