Members of the Korean Veterans Association hold a rally denouncing China’s installation of steel structures in an overlapping maritime zone between the two countries in the Yellow Sea near the Chinese Embassy in Seoul on March 31, 2025. (Yonhap) SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire) — A major veterans group on Monday staged a rally condemning China’s recent construction of large steel structures in a maritime zone jointly managed by South Korea and China in the Yellow Sea, calling for their immediate removal. The Korean Veterans Association’s rally took place near the Chinese Embassy in central Seoul to protest against the structures built since last year in the provisional measures zone, where the two countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones overlap.
“China’s unauthorized installation of large-scale steel structures is a direct challenge to our maritime security,” Shin Sang-tae, the group’s chairman, said in a statement. “The Chinese government must immediately remove the structures.” After the rally, the group delivered a letter protesting the structures’ installation to the Chinese Embassy.
The maritime zone was set up under a bilateral fishery agreement signed in 2000 and allows both countries to conduct fishing operations there. Beijing has claimed the structures are fish farming facilities. Seoul’s foreign ministry has said it was working with related government agencies to ensure South Korea’s legitimate maritime rights and interests in the Yellow Sea and conveyed its concerns to the Chinese Embassy.
