Sakunthala, celebrated for her versatility in roles ranging from heroine to villain, passed away in Bengaluru on Tuesday after a brief illness. She was 84. Born in Salem, Sakunthala was named after the 1940 MS Subbulakshmi film Shakuntalai .



Her breakthrough role came in 1970 with the cop thriller C.I.D.

Shankar, alongside Jaishankar and Thengai Srinivasan, earning her the iconic title "C.I.D.

" Sakunthala's career began with classical dance training under the famed Lalitha-Padmini-Ragini trio. Her dancing talents opened the door to Tamil cinema , where she transitioned from dancer to actress, sharing the screen with legends like Sivaji Ganesan and MGR. She starred in blockbuster films such as Padikkada Methai and Kai Koduththa Dheivam.

Later, she remained active in the industry through television series before relocating to Bengaluru to be with her daughter. Her death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fellow actors and filmmakers..
