A Vernon man who threatened to kill a downtown driver was sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge, meaning he’ll have no criminal record if he abides by probation conditions. Johnny Curtis Norrish, 35, pleaded guilty to uttering threats and mischief $5,000 or under in Vernon Provincial Court Wednesday. Court heard charges stem from an incident in August this year, where the victim was driving downtown and noticed Norrish in a white baseball cap.

The victim parked his car and Norrish ran over hitting and beating the vehicle, the victim got out of his car and Norrish continued to beat the car before saying, “I’m going to f-ing kill you” to the victim. Norrish has suffered seizures on and off all his life and is currently without a fixed address, relying on the Upper Room Mission. Norrish also struggles with methamphetamine usage and is a first-time offender.

In his sentencing, Judge Jeremy Guild noted Norrish’s struggles. “Obviously something happened on that day. I mean, you had these challenges all your life and this is the first time you came to court,” said Guild.

“Maybe it was crystal meth. Crystal meth does have an impact on people..

.it's not always consistent, but sometimes it makes people really angry or anxious and makes them lash out more than they usually would.” Norrish must abide by certain conditions on his 12-month conditional discharge including no contact with the victim, and completing counselling as required by a probation officer.
