His daughter confirmed that he passed away due to pneumonia.Kilmer, who couldn’t speak due to his throat cancer, last appeared in an emotional scene with Tom Cruise in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick and starred in a documentary on his life called Val the year prior. Both in Val and the television series Willow, he was voiced by his son Jack, who followed him into acting.
He met his future wife Joanne Whalley while portraying Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the original Top Gun. Kilmer and Whalley would have two children, a daughter Mercedes in addition to the aforementioned Jack. The couple divorced in 1996.
A leading man, Kilmer also appeared in many beloved films, including Willow, Tombstone, Top Secret!, and The Doors, where he played Jim Morrison. The talented actor only played Batman once — in 1995’s Batman Forever by Joel Schumacher — and had the tough challenge of following Michael Keaton. He would then be replaced by George Clooney in Batman & Robin two years later, which was a critical disaster and temporarily ended the franchise until Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
