UVA gains commitment from All-Summit League men’s basketball player

Jacari White, 6-foot-3, scored 17.1 points per game as a junior for North Dakota State, adding 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists on his way to earning second-team All-Summit League honors.

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL Virginia landed a commitment from Jacari White, a second-team All-Summit League guard this season for North Dakota State. White, 6-foot-3, scored 17.1 points per game as a junior, adding 4.

3 rebounds and 2.3 assists on his way to earning second-team All-Summit League honors. As a sophomore, he was voted to the conference’s All-Defensive team.



For his career, he has shot 40.8% from 3-point range. He’ll join 6-6 former Toledo guard Sam Lewis, who averaged 16.

2 points per game this season, on Ryan Odom’s first UVA team. Norfolk State (24-11) finished 25th in the final College Insider Mid-Major Poll. Drake was first, Gonzaga second and Liberty seventh.

Hampton Roads native Lonnie Blow Jr. of Virginia State, Robert Jones of Norfolk State, Ritchie McKay of Liberty and Tony Skinn of George Mason were among 12 men named to the Achieving Coaching Excellence men’s basketball honor roll for the season. Memphis’ Penny Hardaway was listed as the “Head of the Class.

” COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Hampton University coach Tamisha Augustin announced the signing of Boston native Kayla Lezama. The 5-foot-11 guard played in 48 games over two seasons for Boston College, scoring a career-high 13 points against Siena in 2023. She averaged 2.

6 points in 2023-24 but did not play for the Eagles this season. Lezama joined Akilah “AK” Shelton, a 6-2 forward from Hardaway High in Columbus, Georgia, in HU’s class for next season. Adeang Ring, a 6-foot-5 forward from Sydney, Australia, announced her commitment to Virginia.

She played this season as a freshman for Central Florida, averaging 12.4 minutes, 3.7 points and 3.

2 rebounds per game. COLLEGE BASEBALL Senior outfielder Christian Rush of William & Mary was named a Coastal Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week, along with Stony Brook outfielder Chanz Doughty. Rush batted .

500 (8 for 16), drove in six runs and scored four during the Tribe’s 2-2 week. COLLEGE SOFTBALL Second-ranked Christopher Newport’s Kate Alger was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, and fellow senior Brooke Greaver was the Player of the Week. Each won the award for a third time this season.

Alger won both of her starts and gave up just two runs in 11 innings. Greaver took over the NCAA Division III RBI lead, knocking in eight in four games. She was 5 for 11 with two home runs for the week.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S LACROSSE Christopher Newport’s Brookelyn Morrison was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time, and Faith O’Connor was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the first time. Morrison tied a school record with 14 draw controls and blocked a pair of back-to-back free-position attempts in the third quarter to help unranked CNU beat No. 17 Roanoke 15-11.

O’Connor, a sophomore, scored a career-high five goals. HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING AND DIVING The VHSL announced its Class 4 all-state team, consisting of the top three finishers in each event at the state championships in February. On the boys’ side, Warhill’s first-place Nathan Walker and Jamestown’s third-place Grayson Britt were honored for diving.

Many girls from Jamestown and Warhill earned honors. All three of the Eagles’ relays gained such awards: the first-place 200 freestyle relay (Lilly Younica, Brooke Ericsson, Brooke Quinn, Addy Heyward), runner-up 400 free (Quinn, Campbell Daniel, Holly Brundage, Heyward) and runner-up 200 medley (Brundage, Charlotte Basic, Daniel, Younica). Jamestown’s individual honors included those for Quinn (second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 500 freestyle), Brundage (second in the 100 free and third in the 100 backstroke) and Daniel (second in the 100 butterfly).

Warhill’s third-place 200 medley relay of Isabella Levin, Jenny Hofer, Taraneh Bonyadiou and Isabella Lorack gained all-state honors, as did Hofer (second in the 100 breaststroke) and Lorack (third in the 100 free and 50 free) individually.
