In pursuit of a Violence Against Women (VAW)-free Philippines, the Zonta Club of Cebu 2 held Teen Summit 2024, with the theme: “Empowering Minds, Healing Hearts: Mental Health for a VAW-Free Philippines.” This Teen Summit was one of the activities of the club’s “18 Days of Activism Against Violence” project, initiated by the Abay sa Kahayag committee of Zonta 2, chaired by Zontian Dr. Elsa Basubas.
The event took place at the Ecotech Center in Lahug. In her opening remarks, chairperson Basubas stressed: “Our goal is to empower women by providing them the tools and knowledge needed to access justice and protection. Our organization aims to break the silence, to support the victims and to become agents of change.
This vision ensures that every person can live without fear, where mental health is prioritized and where no one has to face violence or oppression.” Zontian Ma. Theresa Tio and the rest of the organizing team brought together students from various schools, including Our Lady of Joy Learning Center, Z Club of Childlink High School, Mandaue Science High School and Mandaue School of the Arts.
Despite coming from diverse backgrounds, the students were united in their fight against VAW. One of the speakers, Robby Echavez, discussed the importance of resilience as a crucial skill for personal growth: “Resilience is not instant, but a mental state that develops over time, often through facing and overcoming challenges.” He elaborated on coping strategies, categorizing them into two broad types: maladaptive (negative) and adaptive (positive).
Another speaker, lawyer Jizza Raagas, emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights and taking action against abuse. She pointed out that many perpetrators remain unpunished due to unreported cases: “Many perpetrators of violence and abuse go unpunished because cases are not reported,” she reminded the audience. She outlined key legal remedies available to victims, starting with the Barangay Protection Order, which is issued at the barangay level and is valid for up to 15 days.
Next is the Temporary Protection Order, granted by the courts for a limited period. Lastly, the Permanent Protection Order is issued by the courts with lasting validity until revoked. “Even if the information doesn’t directly apply to you, it could be valuable to friends, relatives or loved ones.
By sharing knowledge, we can help others find the courage to act and access remedies. By reporting abuse, you not only help yourself but others too,” Raagas said. The Teen Summit’s goal has been to inspire and prepare the youth to take an active role in creating a VAW-free society.
Seeing the response, they have succeeded. Hail Zonta Club of Cebu 2!.
