– UP vs UST (men’s) 5 p.m. – UP vs UST (women’s) University of Santo Tomas, last year’s runner-up, guns for its fourth straight win when it takes on University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 5, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Their confidence boosted by their four-set triumph over the Shaina Nitura-led Adamson, the Golden Tigresses aim to continue their victorious ways over the Fighting Maroons in their 5 p.m. showdown.

While UST is on a roll after losing its opening game assignment to Far Eastern University, UP, on the other hand, is still reeling after dropping its last two games. The turn of events pulled the Lady Maroons down to the middle standings, tied with three others at 2-2. Opening the women’s double-header at 9 a.

m., are University of the East which hopes to barge into the winning column when it challenges neighbor FEU. Angge Poyos, one of the key players behind UST’s successful run so far that redeemed them from their opening game loss to FEU, is excited to perform against UP after being sidelined in last season’s second round.

“Excited nako na makatapat sila, for sure marami na silang mga bagong players and sana [maging] maganda ‘yong laban,” said Poyos. “Nakita naman natin sila na hindi na sila basta-basta, so syempre paghahandaan namin, tyatyagain namin and excited din kami na may matutunan sa kanila,” added UST libero and skipper Detdet Pepito. In Season 86, the Tigresses swept the Maroons in two times they clashed, but things have changed a lot since then.

Poyos is expected to carry the scoring cudgels for the Kungfu Reyes-mentored crew alongside Regina Jurado, Marga Altea, Mabeth Hilonggo, Pia Abbu, Bianca Plaza and top-notch setter Cassie Carballo. While UP, coming off stinging defeats La Salle and Ateneo, will again bank on Irah Jaboneta, Joan Monares, Nina Ytang, and Kianne Dolango. In first women’s action, proving they are still contenders, the Lady Tamaraws seek to extend their win to two against the Lady Warriors, who are still struggling after losing several key players.

FEU is set for two games this week after a grueling five-set victory against Ateneo three days ago. Gerz Petallo, Faida Bakanke, Chen Tagaod and Jean Asis along with skipper Tin Ubaldo are expected to be at FEU’s forefront, while UE will pin its hopes on Khy Cepada and Nessa Bangayan. Meanwhile in the men’s division, FEU tries to maintain its pristine 4-0 card versus the winless UE when they clash at 11 a.
