Washington: The US military launched strikes on Monday against nine targets associated with Iranian-backed militias in Syria, in response to recent attacks on US personnel, according to US Central Command. The airstrikes targeted two sites used by Iranian-aligned militias responsible for multiple attacks on American forces over the past 24 hours. The Pentagon reported no injuries among US personnel but did not disclose further details on the U.
S. sites attacked or the specific locations struck in Syria. The U.
S. periodically conducts strikes against Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria. In February, it hit over 85 sites tied to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in response to an attack on US troops.
“These strikes will reduce the ability of Iranian-backed groups to plan and execute future attacks on US and Coalition forces,” the US military stated. Currently, around 900 US troops are stationed in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq, supporting local forces to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, which previously held extensive territories in both countries. Following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, the U.
S. has deployed additional warships and fighter jets to the region to deter Iran and its allies. US forces have also assisted in intercepting projectiles Iran fired toward Israel.
