The U.S. and Iran will hold direct nuclear talks on Saturday, aiming to ease tensions and prevent further escalation.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Thursday that American and Iranian representatives are set to engage in direct talks this Saturday regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
The announcement marks a significant diplomatic shift in Washington’s approach to Tehran. Rubio, speaking at a cabinet meeting led by President Donald Trump, expressed hope for a peaceful outcome. “We’ve made it clear that Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon,” he stated, noting that this firm stance helped initiate the talks.
Diplomatic delegations from both countries are expected to meet in Oman for the initial round of discussions. While the U.S.
maintains that the talks will be direct, Iran claims the meetings will occur indirectly through the mediation of Oman’s Foreign Minister. On Monday, Trump made a surprise announcement that direct negotiations between the U.S.
and Iran were imminent. However, he warned that if diplomacy fails, Iran would face serious consequences. This mixed messaging has caused confusion, particularly as Tehran insists the dialogue will be indirect.
A U.S. official familiar with the planning confirmed that both sides will be in the same room, signaling a rare moment of direct diplomacy.
Despite this, Trump reiterated on Wednesday that military action remains an option if Iran does not halt its nuclear activities. Trump also stated that Israel would play a vital role in any potential military campaign. He emphasized that the U.
S. cannot allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and signaled that Washington is prepared to escalate tensions if negotiations collapse. Senior Iranian officials have responded defiantly.
Mohammad Taghi Asanloo, deputy commander of Iran’s IRGC ground forces, warned that Iran is fully prepared to respond to any aggression, stating, “Any enemy thinking of attacking the Islamic Republic will deeply regret it.” Meanwhile, Shahram Irani, commander of Iran’s navy, echoed the sentiment. Speaking on Thursday, he claimed Iran’s forces were ready for confrontation at sea, dramatically stating, “We will drown the devil, just as Pharaoh was drowned in the sea.
